Safety tips for online dating platforms

Keep money and identifying information out of early conversations. If you choose to meet, use a public place and tell someone your plans. No checklist or badge can guarantee safety, and someone else’s misconduct is not your fault.

Money requests are a reason to stop

Never send money to an online romantic contact. That includes gift cards, cryptocurrency and supposed investment opportunities. If money has already changed hands, contact your payment provider promptly and ask what options remain. Beware of anyone charging a fee to recover it.

Share at your own pace

Avoid exposing your home, workplace, daily route or live location in profiles and photos. You can decline a request for personal information without explaining yourself. Read the platform’s data policy before giving it identity documents.

Make meeting easier to leave

Meet in public, arrange your own way home and tell a trusted person where you are going. Leave if you want to. Consent is specific and can change; agreeing to a date does not create any further obligation.

Report behavior, seek support

Use the platform’s reporting and blocking tools. If safe, preserve relevant messages before closing a conversation. For immediate danger, contact local emergency services. In the United States, report suspected romance fraud to the FTC or FBI IC3. Support from someone you trust can help; you do not need to handle it alone.
